Are prompts creative IP?

AI image prompt field filled with dots and an eye icon with a cross through

I’ve noticed something. Some creatives are reluctant to share their AI prompts.

Which made me wonder whether prompts are now creative IP.

I hadn’t really thought about them that way. My instinct has always been that the valuable bit is the idea. Deciding what you want to make, what it needs to communicate and how you want it to feel, recognising when the result isn’t good enough and knowing how to move it somewhere better.

For me, the prompt is then part of directing the tool to get there.

Creative services

the Acuity way.

It’s absolutely a useful and increasingly necessary skill, but should it be kept secret?

There are plenty of prompt guides, examples and resources out there. Are the people sharing them giving away more than they realise?

If someone has spent months developing a complicated, repeatable AI workflow that gives them an advantage, I can understand why they might not want to publish the whole recipe.

But I’m not sure the magic lives in the exact combination of words typed into the box. Because if I really want to, I can prompt AI to write the prompt!

Or maybe it does. Maybe I’m doing it wrong. Perhaps all that frustration when AI continually misinterprets, or reverts back to something you’d already resolved, is because I haven’t mastered the instruction. Maybe that’s exactly why some prompts are so protected?

Would you share your best AI prompt, or do you consider it part of your creative IP?
