Trust. The most underrated local marketing strategy.

Orange neon sign which reads: Trust. The most underrated local marketing strategy.

After more than 25 years working between national brands and their local partners, I’ve noticed one thing.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s a car dealership, a dental practice, a hotel group, an estate agency or a retail chain, the biggest mistake brands make with local marketing isn’t a lack of budget. It’s a lack of trust.

Many national brands invest heavily in campaigns, toolkits and brand guidelines, then wonder why the marketing coming out at local level feels inconsistent. In my experience, the answer is usually quite simple.

Local teams aren’t trying to ignore the brand. They’re trying to make it relevant.

The best local marketing programmes don’t just give people templates and assets.

They give them the confidence to personalise, to respond to what’s happening in their own community and to create marketing that feels genuinely local whilst remaining unmistakably on-brand.

That’s the difference between compliance and commitment.

The brands that get this right don’t necessarily have tighter control. They have better enablement. They’ve built a relationship where local teams feel trusted, supported and empowered to do what’s right for their market.

When that happens, those local teams stop being distributors of marketing and start becoming ambassadors for the brand.

I’m interested to hear from others who work with multi-location brands. How much freedom do your local teams really have, and where do you draw the line between brand consistency and local relevance?

Let's talk.
