The electric revolution is here.

The Electric Revolution

With increasing customer demand, a wider choice of electric models and government support, UK electric car sales have been growing strongly since 2016 and there are now over 620,000 battery-electric cars (BEVs) on UK roads, plus a further 440,000 plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). Not bad going but the best is yet to come.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), 2022 saw the biggest annual increase in registrations so far, with over 740,000 PHEV and BEV registered. That’s 70% overall growth in plug-in electric cars from 2020 and 90% growth just in BEVs. It’s thanks to customer education plus developments like longer range and greater model choice. Electric is certainly coming to the UK, and reassuringly it’s following the pattern of adoption in Norway some 5 years before us.

For those sceptics out there, you’ll also be pleased to hear that whilst not perfect, the UK’s charging infrastructure is also continually growing to meet the needs of EV drivers. According to Zap-Map at the end of November 2022 there were 36,752 electric vehicle charging points across the UK in 21,906 locations. That’s a 33% increase since 2021. This is in addition to the estimated 400,000 charge points installed at home or at workplace locations.

Always an innovator, our client Citroën have been making driving accessible to all since 1919. So naturally they believe electric cars and vans should also be accessible to everyone. It was at the core of the ‘Power to the People’ EV campaign we rolled out earlier in the year.

Now with the important September registration period coming up and a wide range of nine electric and hybrid models available they wanted to create a real buzz in the marketplace and of course turned to We Are Acuity for local and national support!

Our striking creative concept followed the global brand direction but specifically supported the UK electric vehicle revolution, connecting national and local marketing activity seamlessly and maximising sales opportunities in this hugely competitive arena. To find out more about what we did, have a read of our latest case study, link in the comments below.

We are confident our efforts played a part in driving interest in EVs in September. Plug-In car registrations (BEV plus PHEV) continued to rise that month with 38,116 new registrations of BEVs and 12,281 of PHEVs, giving an overall market share of 22.40% of all new car registrations. Fantastic!
