We recently had the pleasure of hosting a lovely Year 10 work experience student.
Having been keen advocates of work experience for many years, everyone at We Are Acuity strives to offer an engaging and relevant experience to the students we are lucky enough to host. Yes, it takes time, effort, and careful planning to put together a valuable schedule for the week, but what’s the point in offering to host work experience students if we’re not committed to making it worthwhile for them?
As a creative marketing agency, we can tailor the week to either the creative studio or client services side of the business or a mix of both, depending on the student’s interests. We treat our work experience students like we would new employees, introducing them to the whole team, running them through a condensed version of our onboarding documents, and providing a basic insight into our business and what we do.
Our last student expressed interest in the creative side of the business. We provided her with a selection of pretend briefs which she could tackle independently. While she always had the support of the team, allowing her the freedom to manage her own tasks proved beneficial, and she came up with some brilliant ideas.
The feedback we received from the student at the end of the week was excellent. She had a great time and left feeling a sense of accomplishment. In her own words:
“On my first day, I was warmly greeted by the team at 'We Are Acuity,' who were really friendly and welcoming. I was given an overview of their projects and gained knowledge about what they do. Throughout the week, I improved many skills. An example of this was being asked to conduct multiple digital audits, which helped improve my research and evaluation skills. I also learned how to use various software, including Photoshop.”
Work experience can unfortunately sometimes be a bit hit or miss for students.
Where did you do your work experience when you were at school and how was the experience?
